Engaging Our Culture Why is

Engaging Our Culture
Why is it that so many Christians are afraid to engage our culture? As a matter of fact, some go so far as to say it’s “unchristain” to do so. Since I was a new believer and to this day I have never understood this mentality. Scripture teaches that while we are not to be “of the world” we are still supposed to live in it. The apostle Paul engaged his culture on every level. He understood the media at the time, he was sensitive to a city’s cultural trends when he spoke the gospel. If we are to be effective followers of Jesus in our cultural context, then we need to be willing to step out, engage, understand and comprehend that culture without becoming “of it”. Isolated little Christian churches who avoid the culture are really nothing more than (as Jesus puts it) “lamps under a bowl”. So come on church… let’s get out from under the dishes.
