The Ramblings Of John Campea

Life Beyond The Movies

Italian-Flag.jpgOk look, I’m NOT a soccer fan. I never watch a single game. But for some reason I get riveted by the World Cup every 4 years! Maybe it’s the international flavour to the games. Maybe it’s the excitment generated by EVERYONE else on the planet about them. Maybe it’s that I love seeing people of all different nationalities waving their various flags and honking their horns in the streets celebrating a victory of their team.

My city (Hamilton Ontario) is amazingly culturally diverse (not even the people who live here realize it very much). But no matter what team wins a game that particular day… if you step out into the streets you’ll hears car horns blazzing for miles… people driving up and down the streets with their country’s flag proudly flying out their windows and a general feeling of celebration.

Nothing else makes me feel like I live in a very big, diverse and beautiful world like the World Cup. People from amazing different cultures, stepping onto a field and playing the same beautiful game. Japan playing the Auzzies! Iran in friendly sport with the US. Only in the world cup.

Oh… and it’s the one time that I get to yell: “ITALIA! ITALIA! ITALIA!” Go Italy GO!!!!
