The Ramblings Of John Campea

Life Beyond The Movies

Sometimes I Hate My Job

Today has been a really bad day as far as work goes.

Look, I have it pretty good with The Movie Blog and I know it.  I work for myself, from home and I have no clients to keep happy.  It’s the very best of both worlds.  How can I complain?

The problem is (and I’ve mentioned this before on here) is that a lot of people can say a lot of things that honestly are really hurtful.

I take a lot of pride in The Movie Blog.  I put a lot of energy and effort into it.  Oh I could just steal other people’s content, not credit it and throw up tons of emplty links in order to generate traffic… but i don’t do that, becaues I love the site and the readers that go there everyday.

But sometimes stupid people say really stupid things.  For instance, yesterday I put up my review of Lady in the Water (a horrible horrible film).  But instead of intelligent conversation, some people went on there to suggest I purposefully and premeditatedly gave it a bad review just because I don’t like M. Night Shyamalan.  Basically they said my reviews have no integrity.  That hurts.  A lot.

I don’t mind people disagreeing with me… actually I love it when they do because that sparks good discussion. But that sort of stuff hurts.  And when that happens, I shoot back.  Then things get ugly.

Today I have no joy in what I do.  Today I want to just shut the whole Movie Blog down and say "screw it".  Today I hate my job.

I’ll probably feel differently tomorrow… but today I hate it.

  1. I wouldn’t let it get to you at all. Some of those people might just be miserable all the time and have nothing better to do other than to rip or argue with another…which might help them feel better momentarily, but will still be miserable later.

In all honesty, most of the posts/comments you receive tend to be very positive or just a fun argument as noted…and then there are those very few morons that feel the need to post something mean or judgemental that are necessary.

Advice…keep working hard and look at the positives. Enjoy the good posts and F%$$#% the rest. The worst case alternate for you would be to get a desk job like some of the rest of us…DON’T DO IT!!!

  2. Wow John I am sorry to hear that I really do hope you feel better. Many people usually do say things over the internet they wont immediately say if you met them in person. Perhapes you should express more (if you ever do review another “SHAM-HAMMER” film) some of the other films you liked of his. Explain why you loved SIGNS and hated THE VIllAGE quickly and then go on and explain a bit why you also Hated LADY IN THE WATER that might make people not attack you but I can understand why they did. If you speak badly about someone then you critique their work in a negative view most will think you only spoke badly about it because you don’t like the person.

I myself hated LADY IN THE WATER almost entirely. I did however enjoy the score there is one think I must say and that is the fact that James Newton Howard never seems to do wrong when he works with “SHAM-HAMMER”. The movie itself felt to preacher almost as if Shyamalan was trying to say “I am the SHAM-HAMMER and you will worship my work and proclaime me as the new Hitchcock”.

I hope you have a good day sir and I really love your web site you do great work.

    Best Regards,
    Jason Torres

  4. It happens man. Everybody has shitty days at work from time-to-time. Given the field you operate, you get it from jackasses who launch personal attacks on you. For most others it’s having stuff not go their way.

As Krazie835 said, some people will say whatever they want over the internet. It’s like a veil before their face, protecting their true identity so that they are “brave” enough to say what they wish without and inhibitions, and without any thought for the other person’s feelings/opinions.

I myself have got into debates with you before over stuff, but hey, it’s just discussion.

My point is, you get to make a living by doing something you love. Most people unfortunately don’t. Be happy that you can say that 99% of the time you “love” your job.

Occassionally you will get bad days and asshole comments, but for the most-part, you’ve got a nice “niche” of readers on here who make TheMovieBlog.com their first stop on the internet.

One million hits per month can’t lie, eh?

  7. JOHN!!! Listen to me…read your comments on your post about moving from Toronto…

You’ll see that the most dedicated fans love what you do and you have no reason to doubt yourself or what the Movie Blog brings.

You’re letting these guys win by suggesting that you don’t like what your doing. As the Beatles so aptly put it, Let it be.

  12. I love movies, and I found your blog to be one of the best ways to get info on film and all that jazz. I’m a fan , and don’t let silly comments get you down. Especially regarding the quality of “Lady in the Water” as you’re not the only one who has disliked that film. (if it can be called a film)
