Life Beyond The Movies

The End Of A Personal Era: I’m No Longer Going To Be With The Movie Blog

Back on July 24th 2003… about 6 and a half years ago… I started “The Movie Blog” and in doing so (along with many others) helped create and shape the film blogging community that we have out there today.

I was the very first person to establish a regular podcast for movie sites (now just about every film site has a podcast), won awards, appeared in just about every media outlet, and was given the chance to do a lot of cool things.

But as Star Trek: The Next Generation said on their series finale, “all good things must come to an end”.

With those words, I announce that my time with “The Movie Blog” has come to an end as of the end of this month.

First of all I have to say the current ownership of “The Movie Blog” has been FANTASTIC. Very supportive. Very enthusiastic. In general, just couldn’t be more of a pleasure to work for and work with. I will really miss working with them on this level.

Secondly, I have to give a big shout out to all those many many people who have helped “The Movie Blog” be the site that it was. Rodney Brazeau, who has been doing much of the posting the last few months, has been an off and on contributor ever since the site started. You can continue to follow Rodney on his new film site (It’s not that new actually) http://www.TheStub.ca. It’s a wonderful site where Rodney’s film insight will continue to be be published. You should all check it out daily.

Doug Nagy gave the sight incredible personality for the years he was a part of the site. He worked along side of me on the Podcast and was a huge part of why we won the inaugural “Podcast of the Year” award. Doug continues to be a stand up comedian and you can follow him online at DougNagy.com.

Richard Brunton brought a wonderful writing style to the site and runs his own online film site called FilmStalker.Com

Todd Brown was one of the first contributing writers to the site and now runs the incredible TwitchFilm.Net

From Pia, Dan, Ashley, Sharon, Serena… the list goes on and on.

There are just too many people to list individually, but to all of them I owe a HUGE debt of thanks.

Most of all… thank you to all “The Movie Blog” readers. Many of you have been with me and the site from nearly the beginning, and I can’t express my gratitude to you enough.

You will still be able to find me writing about movies as the Editor at the new AMC Entertainment movie news blog that you can find here:
www.amcentertainment.com

I’m also going to start posting again at my personal blog over at www.campea.wordpress.com

Chapters end, and chapters begin.

Thank you again.

Los Angeles Obeservation #3 – Booze

First thing you should understand about me is that I’m not much of a drinker. No, it’s not for religious or health reasons, but rather because I just don’t like the taste of much alcohol and because I don’t get any sort of buzz from drinking it. Having said that, even I from time to time will enjoy a vodak cooler or something else along those lines.

Now, in Canada if you want to get your hands on some booze, you’ve got to find yourself a government owned and operated shop called (in Ontario) an LCBO. You’ll find them around if you look hard enough. So imagine my surprise when I came down here and saw that booze is EVERYWHERE! It’s even in the grocery store. I’m not kidding… right across the street from where I’m living is a giant “Ralphs” grochery store… and at least 3 full aisles are all booze. And it’s CHEAP! I’d say at least 15-20% cheaper than in Canada. Beer is like half the price.

Every grocery store, every corner store, every Popsicle stand in the city also sells alcohol. It takes a little getting used to.

Sleepless In Los Angeles

Despite all the fun I’m having here in LA, and all the beautiful weather (especially when compared to what they’re getting back in Hamilton Ontario right now), one of the unfortunate negatives of my time here so far is lack of sleep. I’d like to tell you that lack of sleep comes from the all night Hollywood parties I’m attending each and every night… but no. I just can’t sleep.

For some reason I’m only getting like 4-5 hours of sleep a night. I’m having trouble getting to sleep (it’s just past 4am here now), and then for whatever reason, I’m still waking up at 8am each morning whether I want to or not.

It’s really starting to take its toll on me too. Not only do I notice that I have a lot less energy… I’m also a little more irritable and I’m having a hard time focusing. On top of that, you can REALLY see it in my face. I took a picture of myself today and when I looked at it I was shocked by how totally sickly and exhausted I looked in it. I really need to start getting some sleep.

I’m actually thinking of starting to jog again. I haven’t jogged in years, and quite frankly I hate it, but a number of articles I’ve read suggest jogging in the day can really help you sleep at night, and at this point I’m willing to try just about anything.

LA Observations #2 – No One Walks

My second observation that I’ve made about life here in LA is that NO ONE WALKS ANYWHERE! I swear, if anything is more than a 3 minute walk away… they drive. I’m not kidding. Here’s a good example:

The other day I’m talking on the phone to a woman I know here in LA. She was asking me how I was enjoying my new place and I told her that I love it and that one of the best things about it is that it’s just a 40 minute walk from “The Grove” (A fantastic outdoor shopping centre here in LA). She burst out laughing at me. “Are you serious?” she asked. She then proceeded to tell me how cute that sounded.

But it’s not just her. Talk to anyone about walking anywhere that’s more than a few steps away and they look at you like you’re a freak.

Being In Los Angeles

Well… for those of you who may not know, I’m now in Los Angeles and will be off and on from now on (at least for the next couple of years). Doug and I have been here for 2 weeks now. Our place is amazing (I’ll post pictures later) and we’ve already been able to do more cool stuff in 2 weeks than we have all year!

We’re living right in Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. We’re within walking distance to EVERYTHING. Every time I leave the house I’m seeing something amazing. A few days ago is was Jim Henson’s studios. We live a 5 minute walk from the walk of fame, the Chinese Mann’s theater, The Arclight, Ameoba music, the magic castle… I mean… you name it… we’re close to it!

Sorry I haven’t been posting at all the last 2 months. I’ve just had tons to do and then getting moved down here took a lot. I’m back to posting daily now.

Computer Practical Joke

I came across this little practical joke online today to pull on someone. I’ve got to try this:

1. On your mark’s computer, go to the Desktop and make a new folder.
2. Rename the new folder to e.g. “Porn”
3. Make a screenshot
4. Delete the folder that you’d just created
5. Install the screenshot image as a Desktop wallpaper
6. Enjoy!

I’ll let you know if I try it and what the results were.

Shutting Down The Movie Blog

Well, it’s been a little over 24 hours since I’ve announced the world that I’m shutting down The Movie Blog and joining up with ComingSoon.Net (the world’s largest and most popular internet movie news site) to become the managing editor of a new site called SciFiMission.Com. The site will cover everything Sci-Fi and Fantasy including movies AND TV shows. I’m beyond excited about it.

It’s odd thinking about waking up Monday morning and not instantly start writing posts for the site that I’ve been working on for over 4 years. The Movie Blog has been more than a “job” for me. It’s my creation, my baby, but it’s also given a lot to me. Thanks to The Movie Blog I’ve been able to experience a lot of very cool things, meet some very cool people, go to some very cool places and in general just have a wonderful time.

I almost feel guilty that I don’t feel bad about moving on from it. The opportunity and potential of SciFiMission is just so fantastic, that it’s hard to think about anything other than getting started on the new site. I’ll write more about it when I’m not so dead tired.

Movie Premieres In 11 Days!!

In 11 days (on Saturday September 29th) my film Prince of Peace – God of War will premiere at the San Diego International Film Festival… and I’m scared to death.

I began this journey last April… 17 months ago… and now it’s going to be showing in in a theater at a film festival with people I don’t know. People who have paid money to come to see it (YIKES!).

Ok, so I’m going to Los Angeles Thursday morning for meetings and stuff for a week… then the following Thursday (the 27th) I’ll drive down to San Diego for the opening of the festival and basically hold my breath and inwardly freak out until my movie opens on Saturday afternoon (it then plays again on Sunday afternoon).

Also… I keep almost forgetting that on the same weekend the movie is also playing at a film festival in Orlando… I can’t make it to that one which sucks… but wow… lots of stress right now I tell ya.

In Love With Blackberry – And Cheap Tricks Using It!

Balckberry-8700R-3For the last few months I’ve been contemplating getting myself one of these “Smart Phones”. You know, the ones with applications and web surfing and email capabilities. Anyway, I narrowed it down to the Treo and the Blackberry. There were a couple of things I absolutely wanted:

1) Full Keyboard – I HATE HATE HATE typing on a phone pad with multiple letters per key. I MUCH prefer having a qwerty keyboard to type on.

2) Email – I find that I need potable email much more than I need a phone.

3) Calendar syncing – I can forget stuff… so I want to be able to sync up my calendar on my computer with the device

4) Speaker Phone – I don’t like holding a phone while I’m driving at all. It’s not safe.

Things I didn’t need:

1) Web – I know it’s cool to have it… but I don’t need it on my phone. Not to mention data plans are fringing expensive.

2) Camera – I’ve got digital cameras already thanks

3) MP3 Player – Got an iPod Nano thanks

AND I ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT A CONTRACT! I’ve been using a pay-as-you-go cell phone for the last 2 years specifically because cell service providers SCREW you every chance they get, so I was NOT going to sign a 2-3 year contract. The problem is that without a contract the phones can cost up to $600+ bucks.

I decided I’d get a refurbished or used one to keep the cost down and I started looking at the Treos and the Blackberrys. Both had their pros and cons and I looked around for a few weeks. One night, but friend Bruxy came over to record our podcast, and I knew he had a Blackberry. I asked him if I could see it for a second, and he pulled out this BRAND NEW one. I said “Hey, this isn’t your blackberry”. To which he replied “No, I just got this one this week. I still have my other one in the car…. DO YOU WANT IT?”

So Bruxy GAVE me his old Blackberry which is still a current model… the Blackberry 8700r. I JUST LOVE THIS THING!

So since I had the phone, i went to Rogers and signed up for a plan WITHOUT a contract. Included in the plan was a $25/month data plan for email. It works just fine… BUT… I found a way to get my email… and send email… WITHOUT needing a data plan. Here’s how it works:

Rogers (my service provider) gives each cell phone an email address that will be converted into an SMS Text message to your phone. For Rogers the email address is your phone number@pcs.rogers.com. So if you email to that address, it will show up on a persons cell phone as a text message. Sooooo….

Now when I go out, i just set my “john@themovieblog.com” email address to forward a copy to “my phone number”@pcs.rogers .com and VOILA! I get my email on my phone… FOR FREE… without needing to use a data plan.

Also, did you know you can send email using text? It’s a little more complicated… but it’s free and doesn’t need a data plan. This only works on Rogers, so it might work differently on your service provider:

First, send a text message to the number 0000000000 (yes, ten zeros)

Next, make the very first thing in your message the email address you want to send the message to

Lastly, after the email address leave a space, and then type out your message, then hit send

The service will turn your text message into an email and send it to the email address on the first line of your message. VOILA! Free outgoing email without needing a Data plan.

I tested this system out for a few days to make sure I liked how it worked… and it works great. So I just went ahead and cancelled the $25 data plan…. because I don’t need it.

So now I have a free blackberry that I can use as my phone, calender (and other applications) and email WITHOUT needing a data plan or any sort of contract. I’m very happy. 🙂
